The amazing thing is that the neightbors didn't get a lawyer and go to Best Buy. That's what Geek Squad knows, and what they'll charge you. I installed it as a Linux box and that ran find for ~4 years 24/7/365. I asked them if they wanted it, and they said no, so I had a free computer. Put the jumper back in its normal state, and it booted fine. I put the CMOS jumper in the reset state, powered up, and powered back down. I took it home and powered up and got nothing. Then I got the whole story, and asked if they cared if I took the thing. That's when I went over and said, "Hey, you know I work on computers, what's up with this one?". They took that as an opportunity to buy a new one and leave the old one on the curb. They took it to best Buy and Geek Squad said the hard drive was dead, and to replace it was going to cost like $400 for the drive and labor, on top of the ~$80 they paid for that answer. I've got a good story about why.Īt my last house, the couple across the street had a PC that "died".
